Background
of the Journal: Over 40 years ago (July 10, 1973), 25 individuals gathered at
the General Baptist Church in Ava to organize the
Douglas County Historical and Genealogical
Society. Initial officers were Glen Dale
Hartley, President; Geneva McCullough,
Vice-President; Secretary, Marilyn Alms; and Zona
Hightower, Treasurer. One year later (July,
1974), the Society published the first
Journal. Except for the 1979 through 1984
period, during which it was inactive, the Society
continued to publish Journals with delightful
stories, remembrances, and family information; each
one of the Journals has its own personality like a
block of a patchwork quilt. Collectively, the
74 Journals published from 1974 through Summer 2019
are slowly developing into a large but still
incomplete mosaic of the history of Douglas County,
Missouri. It has become one the most valuable
historical resources available about the county and
its inhabitants, past and present.
