IT WAS A SUCCESS.

The Reunion Was Far Better Than Expected.  Large Crowd in Attendance – Good Speaking Each Day – The Roster.

Everybody who attended the soldier’s reunion in Ava one year ago said it was the best reunion ever held in South Missouri, and those who attended the reunion here last week say it was fully as good as that of last year. There was not such a big crowd on Wednesday, but on Thursday and Friday there was an immense crowd in attendance. The campfires at night were well attended and enjoyed by all. Speeches were made by Judge S.P. Smith, Prof. H.S. Wilson, Rev. G.G. Maple, Elder H.B. Foster; of Rolla, Hon. J.P. Logan, of Clinton township and others. The main speech and the one most complimented was the address Thursday afternoon by Elder H.B. Foster, of Rolla. It was one of the finest addresses we ever heard on an occasion of this kind – the big speakers of last year’s reunion not excepted. Capt. Robert Anderson acted as master of ceremonies in a very pleasing and satisfactory manner. Mrs. Largo of Granada and her sister from Kansas assisted by Charlie Anderson of the Granada Times, furnished some excellent music and otherwise entertained the crowd at all the meetings. The negro song and dance or cake walk by Charlie Anderson and his sister, on Thursday night, was a very laughable affair and enjoyed highly by all who were present. The Normal band furnished some excellent music, and that too, free of charge. Grant Eslick and his deputies kept good order on the grounds – in fact they had very little to do as there were very few drunk men to be seen. Taking it all in all it was a grand affair and should be appreciated by every business man in Ava. The success of this reunion is largely due to the faithful work of Messrs. J.L.B. Harnden, M.V.B. Knight, A.E. Bristol and other old soldiers. We would like to have given a more extensive write up, but our limited space this week forbids.

Copyrights and Good Ethics -- This site is copyrighted to protect the many creators of the body of work contained here.  Use this information freely but tell your readers where you acquired the information.  A copyright comes into existence when a work is created. Only “original works of authorship” can be protected by copyright.  An example of this would be cemetery records – if you copy names and dates from a cemetery, that in itself might not be copyrightable, unless you have added information to it, such as compiling multiple cemeteries into one source, such as Laine Sutherland’s (et al) Gone But Not Forgotten: Cemetery Survey of the Eastern District, Douglas County , Missouri (1995).  My own transcriptions of Fairview and Oak Forest Cemetery are also copyrighted, because I added additional information not available on the headstones. For works created after 1978, copyright protection lasts for the “life of the author, plus seventy years”. For works created before 1978, the protection is good for a maximum of 95 years, with a minimum of 28 years. Note that “official government publications are not eligible for copyright in any form by anyone” – the information can be used, as it is public domain, but you cannot call it your original work. -- Kristi Towe, Coordinator
